Dangote Refinery: Will It Start Soon?

Calm Down, Dangote Refinery Will Start When It Starts - Chika Mbonu

In July, the NPC, led by Acting Governor Volusia, increased Nigeria’s monetary policy rate by 25 basis points to 18.75% from 18.5% in May. The fate of future MPC meetings remains uncertain, but our focus today is on the long-anticipated Dangote Refinery.

Understanding the Dangote Refinery Project

As of October 2023, the Dangote Refinery is set to commence diesel and jet fuel production, with a daily capacity of 350,000 to 370,000 barrels. Petrol (PMS) production is slated to begin on November 30th. While there have been fluctuations in crude supply, Mr. Edwin Kumar, Dangote Refinery Group Executive Director, assures that these issues will be resolved.

MPC Meetings and the Future

Discussing MPC meetings, Chika Mbonu speculates that the next one might occur in late October, pending the confirmation of key roles. The decisions made during these meetings have a significant impact on Nigeria’s economic policy, especially concerning inflation and interest rates.

Chika Mbonu suggests that the incoming team may accelerate the confirmation process, possibly influencing the monetary policy direction in the first half of October. The key challenge is combating high inflation, which necessitates potential interest rate hikes.

Diesel Prices and Deregulation

Diesel, the fully deregulated product in Nigeria, has seen its price surge to 900 naira per liter. The removal of the 75 naira subsidy on diesel has contributed to this increase. However, the question arises: Is petrol truly fully deregulated, given its price trends amid fluctuating oil prices?

Chika Mbonu highlights that several factors affecting inflation, such as high exchange rates, security challenges, and supply chain issues, are beyond the control of the Central Bank of Nigeria. This prompts consideration of whether petrol prices still involve some form of subsidy.

Electric Cars and the Future of Energy

The discussion shifts to electric cars, and Chika Mbonu emphasizes the need for Nigeria to adapt to renewable energy sources like gas and electricity. With the global shift towards electric vehicles, Nigeria must prepare for reduced petrol consumption and explore cleaner energy options.

The Dangote Refinery Project

Chika Mbonu commends the Dangote Refinery project as a private sector initiative. Despite uncertainties about its opening date, he underscores the significance of this massive endeavor for Nigeria’s energy landscape. The refinery’s success could alleviate the country’s dependence on imported fuels.
